What to Expect as an Apprentice

An apprentice begins their journey by completing a probationary period of 250 hours, establishing a foundational understanding of the trade. Following this initial phase, the next step requires the apprentice to accumulate a substantial 1000 on-the-job hours, crucial for gaining practical experience. In parallel, the apprentice must engage in 144 hours of technical-related instructional courses each year for a duration of three years. This comprehensive training program emphasizes the importance of onthe-job training, particularly for the OPCMIA, as it equips apprentices with the necessary skills to effectively utilize tools and materials. Mastering these techniques is essential to ensuring quality workmanship that meets the expectations of contractors. Throughout the 144 hours of classroom instruction, apprentices are exposed to various certifications and training opportunities that enhance their career prospects year after year. Among these, OSHA-30 and First Aid/CPR certifications are mandatory and must be completed within the first year. As apprentices progress, they will refine their skills in both manual and electronic applications, focusing on critical areas such as mathematics, jobsite layout, and blueprint reading. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to demonstrate their competencies in designated training areas, where they can practice layout skills, work with live materials, and finish projects as if they were on an actual job site. This hands-on experience is integral to apprentices development and success in the field.

What to Expect as a Member

Upon being sponsored by a contractor and fulfilling all requirements, you will embark on your journey within the Local 11 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program (JATP), which is part of the United States’ oldest Building Trades Union. From your very first day on the job, you will not only start earning a livable wage but also accumulate hours that contribute to your retirement and healthcare benefits. Local 11 is led by elected officials who possess extensive experience in the trade, ensuring that the interests of members and their families are prioritized during negotiations. The union engages in collective bargaining to secure higher wages, enhanced benefits, and the safest working conditions for all members.
